Our Guests are very helpful in often making positive suggestions and comments on ways in which we can improve what we have to offer. However one comment that is often voiced
We came because it is a charming friendly place to stay. The building is beautiful and so is the contents. Thank you for trusting us with the beautiful furniture we took care of whilst here. Please don’t change it. It is every bit as good as my friends described it when persuading us to come some years ago. - Mr & Mrs Stannard, 2008
'Hope it isn’t changed too much' - Mrs Clements, Wiltshire
'You have something here that is sadly lacking in most hotels. Old worlde charm, service and good old fashioned hospitality and friendliness. Long may it continue in the same tradition. Please don’t change your unique building, superb staff and lovely old fashioned standards' - Mr & Mrs Ferguson, Keswick.
'We have been completely spoiled and look forward to seeing you all again' - M. Castledine, Honiton
Royal Glen’s heritage is number one!
The combination of a friendly relaxed family atmosphere, great food and
an indoor swimming pool, were all very high on the list of pluses given
during our recent telephone research. But most popular of all - simply because
it was mentioned by everyone - was the sheer pleasure you take in staying
in, perhaps, the most historic hotel in Sidmouth. We will continue to cherish
the special place that the Royal Glen has in your affections and in the
nation’s heritage, with its Grade 1 listing. At the same time, we
promise to continue to bring a quality of food, service and atmosphere which,
you say, meets your needs and brings you back - often several times a year
- year after year.
A Poem - To Sidmouth with love
Like most Sidmouth devotees, our regular visitors have a very real attachment
to the resort, and indeed, to being part of the 'Royal Glen Family'. Edgar
Mathias, from Tavistock, has captured this feeling in verse. Edgar and his
wife, Thea, discovered us after a recommendation from a local client, during
one of their regular business trips to the town. Nearly 30 years on - and,
sadly now without his 'first love', Edgar returns to us still, twice a year.
His love for Sidmouth is beautifully portrayed in verse, which we have the
greatest pleasure in conveying to you all, and hanging in a special place
in the hotel.
To Sidmouth with love
I came to Sidmouth with my love upon a winter's day
In doom and gloom in '71 for just a one-night stay
Since then there's been a love affair with this enchanting place
With sea and sun and balmy air though years have flown apace
So - did we come again each year to keep the memory green
Of sandy, shingly beaches and ocean's changing scene;
Of gardens lush in summer and in spring
Of joys in heart and lilting songs to sing
Of Salcombe Hill where breezes blow
seafret rising in evening's glow
Of west wind wafts from Sidmouth Strand
soft caress of a lover's hand
So now, without my love I come here still
to walk alone on Salcombe Hill
But though the joys of other days may pall
Sidmouth will hold me still in thrall.
